To be successful in today’s competitive environment, companies must remain adaptable and work in an agile manner. “Leaders in particular are expected to model these skills,” says Wilhelm Goschy, CEO of Staufen AG. But companies know that many of their employees in managerial and top positions have catching up to do in this regard. “The study shows that, so far, in only 24 percent of companies are executives generally open to digital tools, such as those used to manage projects,” Goschy said. A third of the companies also complain about the lack of teamwork skills among their own top employees, and truly inspiring and motivating employees only succeeds in 8 percent of the companies.
Many managers take over the tasks of others
Staufen Board Member Goschy sees one reason for this behavior among many managers: “They themselves want to get ahold of a problem and in doing so underscore their competence.” According to the study, 50 percent of managers have problems prioritizing and delegating tasks. When working from home or in virtual teams, many managers also fear losing control of their employees. “Instead of empowering the team to find the solution themselves, many managers simply offer it up,” observed Dr. Andreas Romberg, Managing Director of Staufen.ValueStreamer GmbH. “But this behavior leads to frustration among employees, because they are unable to grow. As a result, they may shut down and complain about too little communication as well as a lack of trust.”
Making adaptability part of the corporate culture
The ability to work in a team, communication, motivation – coupled with an openness to digital collaboration tools – are the competencies that play an important role in transforming companies. And that managers need to improve in order to move their company forward. Social competence also includes dealing with mistakes. But not only do many managers have a problem admitting their own mistakes, a third are unable to appropriately deal with employees’ mistakes.
“In the future, managers must focus less on being decision-makers and more on empowering others and ensuring smooth collaboration in a continuous improvement work system,” says collaboration expert Romberg. “If a company is unable to succeed with this new understanding of leadership, it will be difficult to make adaptability part of the corporate culture.”
